SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS:

My work belongs since 35 years to what could be defined as “computational physics light”: a computer experiment of moderate workload is the key to interpret an experiment, to explain a microscopic mechanism, to understand a general trend, and (in some cases) to discover a new “theorem”. I have most often addressed crystalline semiconductors and insulators, focussing on properties such as band offsets, lattice dynamics, dielectric response, piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, flexoelectricity, and the theory of the insulating state. A few papers also addressed molecules and polymers. I am a coauthor of the so-called “modern theory of polarization” (since the early 1990s), the
“modern theory of the insulating state” (since 1999), and the “modern theory of orbital magnetization” (since 2005). On the computational side, I am a coauthor of the first ab-initio calculation ever of (i) many-body Green’s function in a molecule (1976), (ii) dielectric constants (1986), (iii) piezoelectric constants (1989), (iv) spontaneous polarization in pyroelectrics (1990), and (v) in ferroelectrics (1993).

SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION:

About 180  scientific papers published in international journals and refereed conference proceedings; 80 of them have appeared on Phys. Rev. B or Phys. Rev. Lett. Many of my papers are single-authored.
I am listed among the "Top Italian Scientists" (http://topitalianscientists.org).
