BARAI (HARAI)

To sweep. A quick, sharp action of Tori's sole of the foot against the Uke's ankle or heel. The attacked foot is moving or carrying a little weight. A perfect timing is absolutely mandatory. The best moment to attack is when Uke is shifting his/her body weight from the supporting foot to the other one, e.g. when Uke is stepping. The sweeping action must be simultaneous with the weight transfer.
Barai; techniques

    De Ashi Barai
    (Ashi Waza)
The term ``De'' is often translated with ``advancing'' , but the technique is equally effective when Uke is going to step backward. May be a more faithfull translation is ``to sweep the advanced foot''. This apparently simple technique is, perhaps, one of the most diffult in the whole GO-KYO. To make it effective in Randori, it is useful to pull the Uke's sleve to force him into a longer step. A small amount of energy is needed to make Uke to fall.
    Okuri Ashi Barai
  (Ashi Waza)
To sweep both the Uke's feet simultaneously. This technique requires Uke to sidestep or to move in a circular way. The best moment to attack is when Uke is moving one foot towards the other one. To make the sweeping action wider a useful trick is to rotate the supporting foot parallel to the sweeping direction. A medium amount of power is required to throw both Uke's legs into the air. As in any Judo technique, the needed power must be primaily supplied by the hips, and not only by the attacking leg
    Harai Tsurikomi Ashi
  (Ashi Waza)
To sweep the Uke's ankle when he/she is stepping back. A deep involvement of Tori's hips and a powerful lifting (Tsurikomi action ) is necessary. The final resul is one of the most spectacular Judo throw : Uke is lifted almost horizontally at the level of Tori shoulders by the combined action of the Tori pull and sweping leg. Top competitors as Udo Quellmalz and Sergey Kozminin finish this technique by arching backward and throwing Uke through a full arc. Uke is actually forced to sommersault towards his/her front corner.
   Ko Uchi Barai
  (Ashi Waza)
This is a sort of interior De Ashi Barai, where Tori sweeps from inside the; Uke's ankle/heel when he/she is stepping forward or sideways. It is very simlar to Ko Uchi Gari, but the Uke's foot is swept by the sole of Tori's foot with a quick movement which does not involve any leg or body contact.
