6 The user interface

The interface offered to the user to master the reconstruction process is divided into three parts (frames):

Top frame:
session management;
Middle frame:
input of parameters and output of the results;
Bottom frame:
moving across the reconstruction steps.

In the top frame the user finds all the controls needed to manage a session: to close a session; to go back to the upload page and start a new reconstruction; to obtain help on the current step. These controls are available in all steps. In addition, the user finds in this frame a summary of the final status of the operations involved with the current step of the reconstruction.

The middle frame realizes the interaction: at each step the frame is updated and a specific interface is loaded. The user can interact in several ways: by modifying parameters; fixing initial conditions; manually modifying the results obtained by the automatic processing. The interactivity present in this frame is very useful when using the system with learning or research purposes.

The bottom frame gives to the user a control on the flow of the reconstruction process. The user can move from one step to the other, for example to repeat a specific action with different settings. An additional checkbox (expert mode) is a switch from/to an advanced version of the interface, mainly intended for research purposes, that gives access to an extended set of control parameters.

In the learning mode the user can access the system only through preset profiles and can only passively follow the reconstruction process. First, the user will go through the authentication step, logging in as house-demo, for example. The home page is then updated to an upload page (as in Figure 4 (a)), but with the left and right images already set-up1.
